3M™ Tegaderm™ Roll is a non-sterile, transparent adhesive tape in a roll format used for fixing dressings and medical devices, as well as protecting the skin from moisture and friction. Because it comes in a roll (available in various dimensions), it offers maximum flexibility as it can be cut to the exact length and shape desired.
1. What are these dimensions used for?
5 cm x 10 m: Best for fixing thin tubes and probes, or protecting small linear scars and the edges of larger dressings.
10 cm x 10 m: The "gold standard" for general use. Excellent for fixing medium-sized gauze, covering smaller tattoos, or protecting joints (knee, elbow).
15 cm x 10 m: Used for large surface areas such as the back, thighs, or chest. Often used for skin protection in patients at risk of pressure sores (decubitus) on the sacral area or for large postoperative wounds that have already healed (primarily closed).
2. Key Advantages (Common to all)
Adaptability (Custom Cut): You can cut exactly as much as you need, which reduces waste.
Waterproof: Allows for washing and showering without removing the dressing.
Bacterial Barrier: Protects against external contamination as long as the film remains intact.
Non-sterile Packaging: Because of this, it is crucial not to place it directly onto an open wound (where blood or tissue is exposed), but rather over gauze or on intact skin.
3. Tips for Successful Application
Since larger dimensions (like 10x10 and 15x10) are harder to apply precisely without wrinkling:
Always round the corners: This drastically extends the life of the film because sharp corners catch on clothing more easily.
"No-stretch" technique: If you stretch the film while applying it, it will try to return to its original position and "pull" the skin, causing redness and irritation.
Combination with Cavilon: Using Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film before applying the Tegaderm film provides extra protection for the skin and makes removal less painful.
Removal Tip: To remove the film painlessly, do not pull it upwards (perpendicular to the skin). Instead, grab an edge and pull it parallel to the skin in the direction of hair growth. This stretches the film and allows the adhesive to release more easily.
